Silicone Moulding Rubbers

ACC manufacture several groups of silicone moulding rubbers which have easy mix ratios, cure at room temperature and offer fine detailed reproduction.

High Tear Silicone Condensation Cure Range

  • Well suited to fine details and extensive undercuts

Low Tear Silicone Condensation Cure Range

  • Lower costs
  • Suitable for less intricate work

Addition Cure Moulding Rubbers

  • High tear
  • Very low shrinkage

Food Grade Moulding Rubbers

  • Thoroughly tested by an independent laboratory and certified to meet FDA CFR 177.2600EC 1935/2004 and EU 10/2011

RTV silicone rubbers use two different types of silicone chemistry to form an elastomer: condensation cure systems, which use a tin based catalyst, and addition cure systems, which use platinum based catalyst. Although the end products can be very similar they do have some key differences which should always be considered when making your product selection.


Addition Cure vs Condensation Cure

The differences between the two systems should not be referred to in terms of positives and negatives but rather properties that will provide benefits for different applications.

Key differences:

Addition Cure

  • Low shrinkage - below 0.1%
  • Marginally higher tensile strength
  • Slightly tougher rubber
  • Needs to carefully and accurately mixed
  • Platinum catalyst can be poisoned (*see note below)
  • Good abrasion resistance
  • Can be accelerated using heat
  • Tolerant to the addition of silicone fluid as a softener

Condensation Cure

  • Lower costs
  • Broader product range
  • Less sensitive to exact mix ratio
  • Easy to use thixotroping agent available
  • Accelerator catalysts available to speed up cure
  • Mixing of grades possible to achieve desired hardness

Where the application demands good dimensional stability, e.g. precision moulding, prototyping, making masters or very large objects, then addition cure would be the preferred choice. However, the shrinkage levels for a good condensation cure are still very low at about 0.5%. The reproduction and release properties of both materials are excellent as is the transfer of very fine detail.

ACC Silicones' have a wide range of moulding rubber products which can be used for a variety of applications including food grade products for use with chocolate, icing sugar and other confectionery and skin rubber for using to create prosthetics or for use in special effects for films & theatre. Both high and low tear products are available. ACC Silicones' moulding rubbers are also ideal for creating tampo print pads for printing on ceramics, plastics and metals.
